Welcome to the Westside Elementary School Media Center.

Our theme for the 2017 - 2017 school year is "Reading is a Thrill."  This Carnival Theme is so much fun!  Our media center has become a thrilling place to be with carnival signs everywhere.  The students and teachers love it!

Destiny is our on-line catalog.  Please feel free to search through our collection.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is used at Westside Elementary to encourage and reward reading.  To keep up with your child's progress, use the Home Connect link below.  You will need your student's login information.

Link to AR Home Connect

Username:  (your child’s 8-digit ID found on his/her report card and the one he/she uses to log into AR at school)

Password:  (your child's last name)

In Home Connect you can:

  •  Setup Email Alerts to receive emails showing your student’s quiz or test results
  • Monitor your child’s progress toward reading goals
  • Search for books with available AR tests (this does not mean we have the book in the library, just that there is an AR test available for the book.)
  • See the books your child has read.

Reading Tips

Reading Tips:

Read to your child every day!

Create a comfortable reading spot!

Encourage your child and make them feel special.

Read aloud together!

Make reading time special!

Provide books for your child to read in the car or while waiting for appointments

Talk about books you have read!

Take your child to the Library often and check out a variety of books.

Be a role model-read on your own.  by seeing how much you enjoy reading, your child will learn that it's a great source of information and it's fun!

Reading - 5 Finger Rule

The Five Finger Rule

To determine if a book is just right for you, use the Five Finger Rule.

1. Choose a book.

2. Find a page near the middle of the book to read. Choose a page with little pictures.

3. Read aloud in a whisper so you can hear the places where you are having difficulty.

4. Put up one finger for every word you don't know. If you put up five fingers before you reach the end of the page, put the book away. It is probably not the right book for you right now.

5. If you know all the words but are reading very slowly, you may not enjoy the book.

*Find another book and repeat the process.
