Hello, my name is Dr. Sam Lassiter and I am completely privileged to return to Westside Elementary as an Assistant Principal. Education has always been my passion although I took a nontraditional route before beginning my teaching career at Lowndes High School in 1994.
I attended Mercer University in Macon, Georgia and graduated with a BBA, with concentrations in Economics and Finance, in 1983. I was then accepted and attended Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law, also in Macon. My ultimate goal was to teach law and I wanted to have a true idea of what I planned to teach. I graduated in 1986 and my first job was with a law firm in Moultrie. I later practiced in Valdosta, Quitman, where I was also a Municipal Court Judge, and Nashville. While in Nashville, I was appointed to a temporary position as a Juvenile Court Judge. The appointment extended the time I planned to practice law.
In 1993, I began working on becoming certified to teach. I enrolled at Valdosta State University and by the summer of 1994 I had a provisional teaching certificate in middle and high school social studies. I became fully certified in 1995. In 1994, I was hired to teach in the social studies department at Lowndes High School and I spent 9 incredible years teaching government and law. I was also an Adjunct Professor in the Political Science from 1995 - 1998. I stopped teaching at VSU in order to concentrate on graduate school at VSU. I graduated in 2000 with a MEd in Leadership. I received my EdS in Leadership in 2002 and my EdD in Leadership in 2010.
In 2003, I was hired to be the Assistant Principal at Moulton Branch Elementary. It was definitely a learning curve moving from high school to elementary but I loved it. This is the beginning of my 16th year in administration and I’ve had the privilege of working with many incredible people in different schools in our system. I spent two years at Moulton Branch then moved to Parker Mathis Elementary. After three years at PME, we packed up the building and opened Westside Elementary. I was at Westside for two years then moved to Dewar Elementary. I was at Dewar for two years, moved to Lake Park Elementary for six years, and now am very excited to return to Westside - the school I consider home.
